Everything you need to know before your Ruaha adventure
Getting There
Ruaha sits west of Iringa in south-central Tanzania. By road, it’s roughly 2–3½ hours from Iringa town via Tungamalenga (dry-season times vary). 4×4 is recommended, especially in the rains. Daily scheduled/charter flights land at Msembe and Jongomero airstrips; transfers are arranged by lodges or tour operators. Park gates close in the early evening—plan to arrive well before then.
Accommodation
Choose from public and special campsites within the park, simple park bandas, and partner tented camps/lodges around the Mwagusi, Mdonya and Jongomero areas. Book early for peak months (Jun–Oct) and festive periods; walking safaris and fly-camps are by prior arrangement with licensed operators.
Entry Fees
Charges vary by visitor category (citizen, resident, non-resident), age, vehicle class and activity (e.g., walking safaris). Camping and concession fees may apply. Always check the latest TANAPA fee schedule for Ruaha before you travel.
Regulations
Remain on designated tracks, respect speed limits, and follow ranger/guide instructions. Do not feed or disturb wildlife. Night drives and drone use require specific permissions. Walking safaris are guided activities only and must be booked through authorized operators.
Visitor Safety
Wildlife is truly wild in Ruaha—keep a safe distance and never exit your vehicle except where permitted. Carry ample drinking water, sun protection, and insect repellent. In the wet season, expect muddy sections and potential river rises—follow ranger guidance. For guided walks, wear sturdy footwear and neutral clothing; listen closely to safety briefings. Seek professional medical advice on vaccinations and malaria prevention before travel.
