VISITOR GUIDE
Everything you need to know before your Kilimanjaro adventure
Getting There
Kilimanjaro National Park is accessed from Moshi/Arusha with main gates at Marangu, Machame, Lemosho (via Londorossi), and Rongai (north). Most climbers arrive via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK). Operators provide transfers to gates; Mweka Gate is used for descent.
Accommodation
On the mountain, Marangu Route uses alpine huts (Mandara, Horombo, Kibo). Other routes are serviced by designated tented camps run by licensed operators. Before/after your trek, a wide range of hotels and lodges is available in Moshi and Marangu.
Entry Fees
Fees depend on visitor category (citizen, resident, non-resident), route and number of days. Conservation, camping/hut and rescue fees may apply. Guide and porter services are arranged through licensed tour operators. Always confirm the current TANAPA/Kilimanjaro fee schedule before travel.
Regulations
All climbs must be guided by a licensed operator; solo trekking is not permitted. Stay on marked routes, observe camp rules, practice Leave No Trace, and follow ranger/guide instructions. Drones require prior authorization; off-trail travel and open fires are restricted.
Visitor Safety
Plan for altitude: choose an itinerary with acclimatization days, ascend slowly, stay hydrated, and report symptoms promptly to your guide. Carry proper cold-weather and rain gear, headlamp, and personal meds. Keep to designated paths and never hike alone. Respect wildlife and weather—conditions change quickly at high altitude.
