Everything you need before your Udzungwa adventure
Getting There
Udzungwa sits at the edge of the Kilombero Valley (Morogoro Region). Most visitors approach by road via Mikumi—Kilombero/Ifakara corridor. From Dar es Salaam or Iringa, drive to Mikumi then continue toward Mang'ula (park HQ area). Nearest major airport is Dar es Salaam (DAR); regional flights may serve Iringa (IRI) or nearby strips, followed by a road transfer. Dry season (Jun–Oct) is simplest for travel; the park is open year‑round.
Accommodation
Public and special campsites are available (special camps require advance booking). A range of partner lodges/guesthouses operate in Mang'ula and surrounding villages near the park entrance. Book peak‑season dates early and plan cash/ATMs in advance.
Entry Fees
Fees vary by visitor category (citizen, resident, non‑resident), age and activity (e.g., guided walks). Separate charges may apply for camping, vehicle entry (outside park gate areas), guiding and special permits. Always verify the current TANAPA fee schedule for Udzungwa before travel.
Regulations
Stick to designated trails and obey signage and ranger/guide instructions. Do not feed wildlife or leave litter. Swimming is allowed only at signed pools and when conditions are safe; follow lifeguard/guide direction. Drone use requires written permission. Groups entering forest routes should register at the gate and hire an authorized guide as required.
Visitor Safety
Trails range from gentle to steep. Wear sturdy footwear and carry water (at least 2L per person for longer hikes), snacks and a light rain layer. Keep respectful distances from primates; never feed animals. Follow guide instructions at waterfalls and pools—rocks can be slippery and currents strong after rains. Start early to avoid midday heat, register your route, and check weather conditions before setting out. Practice Leave No Trace.
