Everything you need to know before your Tarangire adventure
Getting There
Tarangire lies ~2.5–3 hrs by road from Arusha on a good tarmac route via Makuyuni–Minjingu, with final access on graded park roads. Main gates include Maweninga and Sangaiwe/Kwasuyo corridors; 4×4 recommended in the wet season (Nov–May). Scheduled/charter flights use Kuro Airstrip inside the park.
Accommodation
Options range from public campsites and pre-booked special campsites to partner lodges and tented camps along the Tarangire River, Silale Swamp area and park boundary. Book well in advance for the peak dry season (Jun–Oct).
Entry Fees
Fees vary by visitor category (citizen, resident, non-resident), age, and activity (e.g., walking). Separate charges may apply for vehicles, camping and guiding. Always check the current TANAPA fee schedule for Tarangire before you travel.
Regulations
Stay on designated tracks and observe speed limits. Do not feed or harass wildlife. Exit the vehicle only at designated points and follow ranger/guide instructions. Walking activities must be accompanied by authorized rangers. Drones require prior written permission.
Visitor Safety
Tarangire’s elephants and buffalo are powerful—keep generous distances and never block animal paths to water. Remain in your vehicle except at designated points. In tsetse areas, keep windows mostly up at low speeds and wear neutral-colored clothing. Carry sufficient drinking water, sun protection and insect repellent. During rains, expect muddy sections—engage 4×4 and avoid waterlogged pans or unbridged crossings. Walking activities and any off-road permissions require an authorized ranger; always follow park hours and instructions.
