HISTORY

SAANANE NATIONAL PARK

History of Saanane

Established as a game reserve in the 1960s and later upgraded to a national park, Saanane protects a cluster of islands within Lake Victoria at the doorstep of Mwanza. Its creation helped safeguard shoreline habitats, island birds, and small mammal populations while offering an easily accessible nature escape for residents and visitors.

As Tanzania’s first urban national park, Saanane blends conservation, education, and recreation—hosting school groups, day visitors, and birders amid granite kopjes, lake vistas, and gentle walking trails. The islands provide important roosts and nesting areas for cormorants, fish eagles, egrets, and seasonal migrants.

Island Wildlife & City Views

Expect easy-going nature walks with sightings of impala, rock hyrax, vervet monkeys, monitor lizards, and prolific birdlife. Picnic sites perch on boulders above the lake, and boat transfers make the journey part of the adventure—with Mwanza’s dramatic shoreline as your backdrop.

Why Explore Saanane?

🌊 Lakeside Escape – Minutes from Mwanza, yet wonderfully wild with sweeping Lake Victoria views.

🦅 Urban Birding – Fish eagles, cormorants, kingfishers and seasonal migrants thrive along rocky shores.

🪨 Kopje Trails – Family-friendly walks among granite outcrops and fig groves.

CONSERVATION

GOALS

Saanane’s priorities include shoreline and island habitat protection, environmental education for schools and communities, responsible day-use tourism, and monitoring of key species. Partnerships with Mwanza stakeholders help balance recreation, conservation, and the health of Lake Victoria’s unique ecosystems.
