ABOUT NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

Africa’s Great Wilderness on the Rufiji

WELCOME

NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

Formerly part of the legendary Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest protected areas. Its wild heart is the Rufiji River—braided channels, ox-bow lakes, and floodplains that sustain elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and a wealth of predators and birdlife. Vast miombo woodlands and palm-studded riverine forests deliver a true sense of African wilderness and solitude.

HISTORY

NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

History of Nyerere

Carved from the northern sector of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park protects a colossal landscape of rivers, wetlands, open plains and woodlands. The Rufiji River—Tanzania’s largest—feeds a sprawling network of channels and lakes that defines the park’s scenery and ecology.

Celebrated for its low visitor density, Nyerere offers unhurried, intimate wildlife encounters. It remains a key stronghold for African wild dogs and supports robust populations of elephants, lions, hippos and crocodiles across its riverine, floodplain and miombo habitats.

A River of Life

Boat safaris along the Rufiji unveil sandbanks, palm islands, basking crocodiles, and spectacular birdlife at eye-level—an iconic Nyerere experience that complements traditional game drives on expansive plains and woodlands.

Why Explore Nyerere?

🌊 Rufiji River Safaris – Sunset boat rides with hippos, crocs and prolific birdlife.

🦁 Big Game, Few Vehicles – Immense wilderness with low traffic and intimate sightings.

🐕 Conservation Focus – A renowned refuge for African wild dogs.

CONSERVATION

GOALS
