VISITOR GUIDE
Everything you need to know before your Mahale adventure
Getting There
Mahale sits on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. Access is typically by air to Kigoma or Mahale airstrips (seasonal/charter), followed by boat transfer along the lakeshore. Limited road access via remote tracks is possible in the dry season with high-clearance 4×4. Most camps/lodges arrange lake boats for guest transfers. Prime trekking and beach time runs Jun–Oct; the green season offers lush forests and fewer visitors.
Accommodation
Options include lakeside lodges/tented camps and TANAPA public/special campsites (advance booking required). Many properties offer full-board packages with guided chimp treks, boating, kayaking and forest walks. Supply logistics are remote—book early, confirm transfers, and plan for cashless payments where possible.
Entry Fees
Fees depend on category (citizen, resident, non-resident), age, and activities (e.g., guided chimp trekking, boating, camping). Separate charges may apply for boats, guides, camping and special permits. Always check the latest TANAPA tariff specific to Mahale before traveling.
Regulations
Always trek with authorized rangers/guides. Keep required viewing distances from chimpanzees; group size and time limits apply. Do not feed wildlife or leave litter. Drones require prior written permission. Swimming is permitted in designated areas—follow guides’ instructions and observe lake safety notices.
Visitor Safety
For chimp trekking, maintain the instructed distance, keep voices low, and do not mimic calls or eat near primates. Visitors with cold/flu symptoms should skip treks to protect the chimps. Wear closed shoes with good grip; carry water and a light rain layer. On the lake, use lifejackets and follow skipper guidance—winds can pick up quickly. Forest trails can be steep and humid: pace yourself, follow ranger instructions, and leave no trace.
