HISTORY

MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

History of Mahale

Along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, the Mahale Mountains shelter dense forests, waterfalls and granite ridgelines. The park was established to protect these habitats and their wildlife—most famously wild chimpanzees that range the valleys and slopes.

Today, Mahale is a haven for science and low-impact tourism. Ranger protection, community partnerships and responsible trekking ensure that primates, birds and rare flora continue to thrive in one of Africa’s most unique lake-and-mountain ecosystems.
