VISITOR GUIDE

Everything you need to know before your Katavi adventure

Getting There

Getting There

Katavi lies in remote Western Tanzania. Access is by road (long 4×4 drives from Mbeya, Kigoma, or Tabora) or by air via Mpanda Airport (MPA) and seasonal/charter flights to Ikuu airstrip inside the park. Main access is through Sitalike and Ikuu areas. A high-clearance 4×4 is essential, especially in the rains (Nov–May). Peak wildlife viewing is Jun–Oct.

Accommodation

Accommodation

Choose between public campsites, special campsites (pre-booking required), and partner lodges/tented camps in/around Sitalike–Ikuu. Fly-camping and multi-day mobile safaris operate in dry season. Remote setting: book early and confirm fuel/food resupply if self-driving.

Entry Fees

Entry Fees

Fees vary by visitor category (citizen, resident, non-resident), age, and activity (e.g., walking safaris). Separate charges may apply for vehicles, camping, guiding, and special permits. Always check the current TANAPA fee schedule for Katavi before you travel.

Regulations

Regulations

Stay on designated tracks; observe speed limits; follow ranger/guide instructions. Do not feed or harass wildlife. Walking safaris must be guided by authorized rangers. Drones require prior written permission. Off-road driving is restricted to protect the fragile floodplains.

Visitor Safety

Visitor Safety

Katavi is wild and remote. Travel with a reliable 4×4, carry extra water, fuel, food, and a spare tire. Keep a safe distance from hippos, crocodiles, and large buffalo herds along the Katuma floodplains; never approach on foot without an authorized ranger. Stick to daylight driving (park hours), watch for black cotton soil after rains, and ensure communications (satphone/radio) if overlanding. Respect wildlife and leave no trace.
