VISITOR GUIDE
Practical info for forest & lakeshore adventures
Getting There
Gombe lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, north of Kigoma. Most visitors access the park by boat (1–2 hours) from Kigoma or nearby lakeshore villages; transfers are best arranged via lodges or tour operators. Scheduled flights operate to Kigoma (TKQ) from Dar es Salaam and sometimes Arusha/Kilimanjaro via connections—check current schedules. Road travel to Kigoma is possible; allow extra time for regional conditions. Park entry formalities are handled at Kasekela (HQ).
Accommodation
Options include TANAPA public/special campsites and basic park bandas (check availability), plus partner lodges and guesthouses in/around Kigoma for pre/post-park stays. Special campsites and chimp trekking slots are limited—book well in advance during peak months (June–Oct).
Entry Fees
Fees vary by visitor category (citizen, resident, non-resident), age and activities. A separate chimp trekking fee or activity supplement may apply in addition to park entry. Vehicle/boat, camping and guiding fees may also apply. Confirm the latest TANAPA fee schedule for Gombe prior to travel and ensure you carry acceptable payment methods.
Regulations
Chimp trekking follows strict rules to protect great apes and visitors: limit group sizes and viewing time, maintain minimum viewing distances as directed by rangers, no eating or smoking near chimpanzees, no flash photography, and avoid visiting if you have flu-like symptoms. Stick to designated trails, keep noise low, and follow ranger instructions at all times. Drones require prior written permission.
Visitor Safety
Trails can be steep and humid—wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and pace yourself with guidance from rangers. For chimp trekking, follow all health guidelines set by TANAPA (e.g., masks when required, no trekking if ill). Keep a safe distance from shorelines with possible hippo/crocodile presence and only use authorized boats with life jackets. Always inform your lodge/operator of your planned route and expected return time.
